Gustav Klimt in Malcesine

Gustav Klimt in Malcesine

In 1913 Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) decided to visit the immaculate italian shores of Lake Garda to experience a sense of natural beauty. Whether as a result of the superb panoramic views or the stunning (and traditional) urban settings to be seen when sailing on the lake, Mr. Klimt chose the small town of Malcesine as the subject for what can arguably be called one of his greatest masterpieces. Indeed, this beauty did not escape the famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt when he completed his work entitled "Malcesine am Gardasee".

Gustav Klimt was a well-known painter of nature and yet, he took a brief hiatus from this genre in order to become immersed within the architectural layout of this town upon Lake Garda. It is thought that Klimt was attracted to the crystal-clear airs that the entire region has become known for. This enabled him to enjoy superior levels of visual exposure while painting. Such a unique quality can be seen in his depiction of Malcesine. Bright colours and dramatic distinctions between the different buildings echo the fact that his views while on the lake were superb. In fact, this work is a notable departure from the more claustrophobic styles which tended to characterise his other paintings while in Austria.

The ultimate result is a painting which exhibits warm pastels, flowing lines and a decidedly surreal flavour that have to define Lake Garda as a whole.
