The fishes of Lake Garda

The fishes of Lake Garda

The enchanting Lake Garda is the largest lake in the whole of Italy in the northern part of the country. Lake Garda is set in the shadow of the mighty Dolomite mountains and is surrounded by several enchanting towns and villages. Lake Garda has long been a popular place for nature lovers to unwind for a few days, while those who have an interest in fishing will find that these cool and calm waters are teeming with different types of fish.

Fishing at Lake Garda is a very popular pastime and people travel there from all over the world in order to cast their line into the water while soaking up the enchanting scenery. The lake’s coastline stretches for around ninety miles, which means that there are plenty of excellent fishing spots to be found.

More than thirty different species of fish inhabit the waters of Lake Garda, with the most common including trout, carp, salmon, eel, pike, perch tench and whitefish. It should be noted that fishing is prohibited at night with the except of night eel fishing, while at certain times of the year there is also a restriction on the size of the fish that can be caught in order to help protect the fish population.

A large number of salmo carpio, which is an otherwise rather rare type of salmon, can be found gracing the waters of Lake Garda. Although this species of salmon has been introduced to other lakes throughout Italy, integration into these water systems has been largely unsuccessful. The adult lake trout is the main focus for many fishermen at Lake Garda and this distinctive type of fish is silver in colour with occasional black spots on the body. The trout in Lake Garda can grow up to fifty centimetres long and tend to be found at a depth of a hundred to two hundred metres.
