The medieval Scaliger Castle in Malcesine

The medieval Scaliger Castle in Malcesine

When planning a trip to Malcesine, one of the top tourist attractions has to be the stunning and historic Scaligero Castle. It is also one of the most notable buildings on the island, as it instantly catches the eye with its impressive tower that stands at 31 metres. Situated along the picturesque coastline, it is also erected amongst the mountains of Monte Baldo.

The history of the Castle
The Castle has seen many changes over the years, and although the actual date of it being built is not known, it is thought that it was somewhere within the timeframe of when the Longobards ruled the island. As well as the many restorations and extensions that the Castle has had over the years, it was also partly rebuilt after having suffered from the effects of a fire. The main roots of the Castle though are firmly with nobility, particularly that of the Della Scala family who originated from Verona.

The Castle today
The Castle offers a fantastic opportunity for a wonderful day out. To reach the Castle you simply enjoy a leisurely walk through the scenic cobbled streets. Then having passed through the elaborate gateway, you will then find yourself stood in a large courtyard with the Casermetta located on your left. This is the building that used to be the guardhouse but is now the Monte Baldo Museum as well as showcasing the Natural History of Garda. To the right of the courtyard is a staircase that leads to a large room called the Polveriera room, that was originally constructed by a team of Austrians. This room acts as an art gallery and is home to the many drawings and paintings that were created by the artist Sala Goehte. Another room within the Castle is that of the Residenza Scaligera, which is an exhibition room that shows the fishing history of the lake.

The Tower

Where everyone must visit though on any trip to Scaliger Castle is the tower. When you reach the top, the views alone are well worth the climb. Panoramic views of the whole of Malcesine can be soaked up while immersing yourself in its vibrancy and history.
