The museum in Cassone

The museum in Cassone

The "Museo del Lago" in Cassone, is a relatively new museum having only been opened since 2008. But just because it is the “new kid on the block” don’t let that fool you into thinking it isn’t worth your time. It may not be the Louvre but as small village museums go it is lovely. It is located in the port village of Cassone which is a small secluded village with a lovely quaint feel, near Malcesine at lake Garda. The village is a throwback to a different era in many ways and really gives you a feel for a classic rural Italian lifestyle.

The museum has a rich selection of local artifacts rooted in Cassone’s history as a fishing port: from tools used by the local fishing boats through the years, to photos of the ships that have frequented the area. It is a rich display that gives you a real fell for what the port is all about and details its history in a very comprehensive but interesting way. If you are a museum buff or you just want to soak in some culture I’d say the museum, or indeed the village itself is most definitely worth a visit.

Outside the museum is the Dell’Aril, one of the world’s shortest rivers that runs into the large Lake Garda. This area was used as a hatchery to keep stocks of seafood at reasonable levels. It contains eels, chub and trout and is another reminder of the town’s heritage. Not only is the museum an interesting way to spend your time but gives you an idea of what the village itself is like.

It’s a great way to understand more about what the village is like. I would highly recommend this museum to those who are looking to find out about the village’s local heritage or indeed those that are visiting smaller towns in Italy and want to see what Italy, away from the hustle.
